Diocese & MATs

Working Together for the Flourishing of Church Schools

The Chelmsford Diocesan Board of Education (CDBE) works in partnership with Multi Academy Trusts (MATs) to support the flourishing of Church of England schools across Essex and East London. Our shared ambition is to promote life in all its fullness through education, ensuring that every Church school is able to provide high-quality education rooted in Christian distinctiveness and the Church of England Vision for Education.

The Diocese values strong relationships with MAT leaders, trustees and local governors. We believe that effective partnership is essential in supporting school improvement, sustaining Christian character, strengthening governance and securing the long-term future of Church schools.

The Role of the Diocese

The CDBE is the diocesan authority for Church schools within the Diocese of Chelmsford. Under the Diocesan Board of Education Measure 2021, the CDBE has a range of statutory responsibilities relating to Church schools, including providing advice, requiring consent for certain decisions and supporting the development of Church of England education.

Our role includes:

  • supporting Church schools and MATs through advice and guidance
  • safeguarding and developing the Christian character of Church schools
  • supporting effective governance arrangements
  • working with Trusts on academisation, growth and sustainability
  • developing a coherent and sustainable diocesan system of Church schools
  • promoting collaboration between schools, MATs and other partners.

Our Vision

The Diocese is committed to promoting life in all its fullness through education across Essex and East London. Our work is guided by the Church of England's Vision for Education and a commitment to ensuring that every Church school remains rooted in its Christian foundation whilst serving its local community.

We seek to work alongside MATs to ensure that:

  • Christian distinctiveness is protected and developed
  • children and young people receive an excellent education
  • schools are sustainable and well governed
  • leaders are supported to flourish
  • Church schools remain active members of the diocesan family of schools.

Partnership with MATs

The Diocese works constructively with MATs through regular engagement, strategic dialogue and shared planning. We recognise that MATs play a vital role in the future development of Church of England education and are committed to supporting strong, sustainable and collaborative Trusts.
